Description

Silverfish are grey or silver-coloured, wingless, with a flattened, elongated body. They are about a centimetre long and have long, thread-like antennae and a three-pronged bristly tail.

Habits

Silverfish are nocturnal and can be found hiding in cracks and crevices during the day. They like warm, humid hiding places, especially where paper products are available, such as attics and garages. They can jump and move swiftly in a wriggling motion similar to that of a fish. They like a diet of starch, mainly sourced from paper products or mouldy grain. In the absence of food, silverfish can live for up to a year, as long as they have access to water. They are often identified by either their pepper-like faeces or by the damage they do.

Defense

  • The most effective method for controlling a silverfish population is to reduce humidity, by increasing ventilation where possible, or by drying out the space in question. Removal of potential food sources and maintaining a cool, dry temperature can also help.
  • In the case of a heavy infestation of silverfishes, your pest control professional may also use chemical products to reduce the problem, but this is a one-off solution and without changing the environment, the problem will return.
